Being an NHS non-executive director
Roles and responsibilities of the non-executive director
Non-executive directors work alongside other non-executive and executive directors as an equal member of a unitary board. They share responsibility for the decisions made by the board and the success of the organisation in leading the improvement of health and healthcare services for patients and communities. Non-executives use their skills and capabilities as a member of their community to:
- Bring independent judgement, external perspectives and advice on issues of strategy, vision, performance, resources and standards of conduct
- Constructively challenge, influence and help the executive board to fulfil its leadership responsibilities to patients, and communities to improve health, reduce inequalities in health outcomes and improve the quality and productivity of healthcare services
- Hold the executive and organisation to account for delivery and ensuring that its obligations to its stakeholders and the wider community are understood
- Ensure that patients and communities are central to trust decision-making and all service users are treated with dignity and respect
- Actively support and promote a healthy organisational culture reflected in their own behaviour, value workforce diversity, and demonstrate equality of opportunity
- Provide visible leadership and a point of access to the board for raising concerns, and act as an ambassador for the organisation
- As a member / chair of board committees, appoint, remove, support, encourage and where appropriate, be a mentor to senior executives and less experienced non-executive directors where relevant
We believe that to make the best possible decisions, NHS boards need people with a mix of skills and experience. We are looking for people from a range of professional and leadership backgrounds and can hold the confidence of patients and the public.
